"Chemistry-Our
Life Our Future"
A one day State Level Seminar on the
theme “Chemistry- Our Life Our
Future” was organized by Carmel
College for Women on November 30,
2011 in collaboration with the
Department of Science Technology &
Environment, Govt. of Goa to
celebrate the International Year of
Chemistry (IYC-2011)
The
Seminar was inaugurated by Prof V.
P. Kamat, Registrar, Goa University
by lighting the Lamp. In his
inaugural speech Dr Kamat lamented
that our current teaching
methodology is exam oriented and
needs to be changed. He proposed
two different modes of teaching 1)
Problem based learning and 2)
Context mapping
The
key-note address given by Prof S. P.
Kamat, Goa University highlighted
the need for awareness amongst all
of us regarding use of alternative
and eco-friendly fuels to reduce
emissions of greenhouse gases
leading to pollution, global warming
and ever increasing petrol prices.
After the keynote address we had 3
technical sessions conducted by 2
eminent personalities
1. Prof. Syed Akheel
Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of
Science and Technology, University
of Mysore, Karnataka
2. Prof. Vijay Khanna,
Head, Organic and Drug chemistry,
Ahmednagar College, Maharashtra
In
the first session Prof. Syed Akeel
Ahmed urged the students to be
independent and confident thinkers
so as to build an empire of
knowledge. He explained in a
chronological and systematic way
“what is science” and how science
should be learnt with understanding
of basic concepts. He also explained
in a very simplified way some
important concepts in science like
pH , acids, bases, mole, molarity,
normality, Ohm’s law.
